Sores / bald patches on pug
Hi Doc

I have a pug that one day came into our property and decided to stay. He looks like a old dog, judging from his teeth and movement. Two weeks ago we batthed him and brushed him out and bought a ne blanket for him. First we notices on his hind leg (top) all the hair was missing and it looked very sore. However, it seems to be very itchy. He now has one on the side of his head. Can you think what could be causing this and what I could use. Your help would be appreciated.

It will need to be tested, but it could be ringworm, infection with Demodex mites, bacterial infection, or an irritation. Unfortunately, the treatment will obviously differ according to the cause, therefore a specific diagnosis is necessary before treatment can be applied. Sometimes, when we adopt stray dogs, just by regular bathing and improving their daily living conditions so dramatically (as you have now done), and by improved nutrition, these superficial skin problems will automatically go away. Obviously, again, if it is a fungus or a mite infection, it must be treated specifically.
