Dear Kind and Concerned Girl Friend
Basically the neurotransmitter called serotonin can help against depression. Levels of serotonin in the brain are boosted if you eat more carbohydrates and proteins. So make sure that your boyfriend eat some carbs and protein at each meal, e.g. cereal and an egg for breakfast, wholewheat sandwiches with cheese or cold meat for lunch and pasta and mince for supper. Skipping meals is a no-no and he may find that taking a good vitamin and mineral supplement like Centrum or Supradyn will help him too. Exercise like going for walks together in the fresh air will also help lift the depression.
Best regards
