Bread - fattening?

How fattening is bread, exactly? Besides the many kinds of health types, I know that there are three basic kinds; white, brown and whole wheat. Is it advisable for people trying to lose weight to eat bread?

A slice of bread weighs about 20-30g, and white bread contains 200-300 kJ/slice, while brown and wholewheat bread contains 186 to 279 kJ/slice (slightly fewer kJs, because it contains more dietary fibre). The old idea that slimmers should avoid carbohydrates, including bread, was refuted a number of years ago when researchers found that low-fat, high-fibre, high-carbohydrate diets gave good results in slimming programmes. If you click on 'Diet' and 'Weight loss' and 'Slimming Diet', you will find an example of such a low-fat, high-fibre diet which does include wholewheat bread.
