diabetic person fasting
Hi Doc

My Dad is diabetic (type 2) and has set his mind on fasting during the month of ramadhan. He is not taking insulin injections. I would like some advice on how we should go about this and what he should be eating for breakfast and after the fast.

Thanks a lot

Dear AD
I would strongly advise your dear Dad NOT to fast for such a long period of time every day for more than a month, if he has type 2 diabetes. If he insists on fasting then I can only recommend that he should consult a clinical dietitian BEFORE he commences his fast so that the dietitian can help him work out an individual diet prescription. Visit the Association for Dietetics in SA Website at: and click on "Find a Dietitian" to find a dietitian in your area. It may also be prudent to discuss this intended fast with your Dad's medical dr.
Wishing you well over the fast and that you Dad will not harm his health
