Drinking Tea and Painful Wind/Distension
I'm having a chronic wind problem - trapped wind, my stomach bloats and rumbles and is really, really uncomfortable and painful. I drink lots of hot, black tea every day and I'm starting to wonder if this might be aggravating things because I start out the day with no problem and it seems to escalate from there. Also it subsides late at night when I don't drink anything but the tea idea could be my imagination?

Dear Rachael
Please have a medical checkup because the symptoms you describe indicate that you may either suffer from excess stomach acid or irritable bowel disease (IBS). Your dr will prescribe the necessary treatment if you should suffer from ulcers, gastric reflux or IBS or other manifestations of the gi tract. If you do tend to produce too much stomach acid then the high caffeine content in tea may exacerbate the situation. Try drinking the tea with milk and/or cutting it out for a week or so to see if this influences your symptoms. If you should have IBS please consult a clinical dietitian (visit the Association for Dietetics in SA Website at: and click on "Find a Dietitian" to find a dietitian in your area), who will work out a specific diet for your condition.
Best regards
