Dietdoc, I admire your patience with the flood of dietary queries you get on a daily basis, and the nice way you always respond. You seem like a very likeable and wise person.

I also have a problem to mention today. I'm 20kg overweight which I mostly gained over the past 5 years, although I've always been at least 8kg overweight in my adulthood. I joined Weighless 3 times, and consulted dieticians twice, but without longterm success. My biggest problem is that I simply cannot go cold turkey on foodstuffs I've liked most of my life so far (I'm 49). Every single diet expects me to immediately stop eating things I thoroughly enjoy (chips, nuts, toasted cheese, etc.) I'm not a chocolate or sweet person really, but would sometimes (once a month) buy one. I love cheese and nuts and savoury stuff and cheese sauce over my veggies. I admire people who could immediately change their diets, and I thought I had it in me too, but I find it impossible. Is there any diet that would give some leeway for these snacky stuff, while at the same time limit the energy intake? Could any items on your slimming diet be replaced once or twice a week by a packet of crisps, or a slice of pizza, or something? I do hope you understand my problem, and that it's not simply a case of unwillingness to change.

Thank you so much for your kind words - you make my day! It is possible to eat a 'forbidden' food now and then when you are trying to lose weight (e.g. a small packet of crisps or a slice of pizza or a chocolate), provided that a) this little transgression does not sabotage your whole diet, b) that you do NOT eat such snacks every day, and c) that on the days when you eat the snack you do 20 min of extra exercise to compensate. Why don't you try eating one of the diets that have been prescribed for you by the dietitians or Weighless for 3 weeks and once a week have ONE snack as a special treat. See if you can stick to this regimen and also add regular exercise (running, jogging, skipping, cycling, swimming, join a gym or Walk for Life) to your programme. Exercise is an excellent 'motivator' and studies have shown that people who combine diet and exercise are more motivated to stick to their diets. So give it a try, you are after all the one who will benefit.
