IBS - allergic to wheat
Please can you tell me what the difference is in being allergic to wheat, citrus etc. and being allergic to gluten. My homeopath has done a Vega Test and has told me I am allergic to wheat and that I must cut out caffeine, chocolates, all wheat products. I suffer terribly from gas, bloating, severe cramps, terrible heartburn (I can hardly breath sometimes) and I have developed such a "pot belly" I'm afraid I will never have a waist again. My weight goes up and down(more up than down) and I have gone from 49 kg to 68 kg. I cannot lose weight as no matter what I eat (even from the foods I can eat like rye bread etc. oats etc. ) nothing seems to work. I have even gone to Weigh Less and picked up 3kg in one month!! I am at a loss as to what to eat, I eat every day a green salad, 2 x rye bread sandwiches, 3 fruits & 3 veggies, and more chicken and fish than red meat. My weakness is chocolate, and Wimpy coffee/mocha choca. I am on constant medication, as soon as I stop the homeopathic treatment all the symptoms come back. Cannot go onto chronic medication as Discovery does not see IBS as a chronic disease. I either suffer from diarrhoea/constipation and do not like to resort to laxatives but sometimes have just no choice. Please help. This spastic colon/IBS problem is causing major hassles in my working life and social life. Too scared to go out and enjoy a meal as I immediately bloat and have terrible gas and cramps and pain. Have to run to the toilet every 5 minutes at work because of excessive gas and it affects my work. Sick and tired of battling with this problem since I was in my middle 20's. Have a highly stressed job and am a highly strung person. Go to gym 3 times a week and do yoga and power walking. Help!!!!

Dear Marilyn
If you are allergic to gluten (a protein that occurs in wheat and other grains) then you need to cut out all wheat products. I strongly urge you to see a gastroenterologist to obtain proper treatment for your IBS as it is ruining your life. Even if Discovery does not pay for your medication you should at least find out what options there are for proper treatment of this most disruptive disease. Click on 'Diet' at the top of this page and do a search with '' to find the article I wrote this year on 'NEW LIGHT SHED ON '. In addition you need to consult a clinical dietitian (visit the Association for Dietetics in SA Website at: www.adsa.org.za and click on "Find a Dietitian" to find a dietitian in your area), who will help you work out a diet that takes your IBS, inability to lose weight and potentially allergies into account. You need professional help ASAP. Then there is the stress which is an important component of IBS - for this I would recommend that you either see a clinical psychologist to learn how to control stress more effectively and how to do relaxing exercises and deep breathing, or to do yoga which can help you to relax and reduce stress.
Hang in there, but do go for help
