Although we live in the 21st century, our physiology is still that of our caveman ancestors.

When you decide to go on a low-calorie diet, your body thinks that famine is coming and that it had better conserve as much energy in the form of high-calorie body fat as it can. As a result, your metabolism starts to slow and you burn fewer calories.

So if a woman weighing 84kg goes on a 1000 calorie (4200kj) a day diet, cutting 1200 calories (5040kj) a day from her recommended daily intake, her metabolism will slow by roughly 400 calories (1680kj) a day, meaning only 800 (3360kj) of those calories will actually contribute to weight loss.

By eating little and often you trick your body out of this process. Even though you are cutting calories and losing weight, the body doesn’  t feel as if food is scarce because it is getting regular injections of energy and nutrients.

The article is correct and humans do switch off their weightloss mechanisms to conserve energy when faced with "starvation" by dieting. This is why we usually recommend that weightloss diets should not be too low in energy (6300 kJ/day for adult women).
