Mercury levels in fish
Hi Doc, I am pregnant and am interested to know which fish to avoid. I know shark, swordfish, king mackerel and tile fish should be avoided but what about other game fish i.e. snoek, king fish and others like rock cod? I usually eat fish twice or more a week, but am concerned about this. Please advice.

Dear Debbie
Congratulations on your pregnancy. The mercury levels in sea fishes are a rather difficult thing to predict as they would depend on the contamination of the sea water in the area where the fish live and also the age and length of exposure to mercury. I cannot with any certainty say that any one species of fish is low or high in mercury. I think that eating fish twice a week should not pose a problem, but if you are worried about this then stick to hake and canned tuna (check on the can if they state that the tuna is free of mercury).
Best regards
