My 13 year old daugter weighs 81 kg

I have a beautifull 13 year old daughter that is 5ft 4inches tall and weighs 81 kgs. I mean she is really a beuty. She says she hates herself and that my wanting to help her with her weight just makes her hate herself even more. She eats on the qt and sneeks snacks all the time. I have a 9 year old boy aswell that is extreamly thin and getting him to put on some weight is just as hard. How am i going to help my daughter loose the bulge. I dont want her to be skinny just healthy i dont want her to have health problems becouse of her weight. Her school work has allso taken a dive lately and i think she is getting teased becouse of the weight. What can i do for her and is it worth while to investigate diet drugs or anti depresants. She says she feels sad all the time and want to die. We love her so much and is a stunning person to be around, What can i do to help. Her dad feels that she is in a phase and we should not worry to much about her weight. (he has been very skinny all his life.) PLEASE HELP ME !!!!!!!!!!

Dear Worried Mom
You are quite correct that your dear daughter has a great problem - her BMI = 30,5 which is far, far too high even for an adult, much less a 13-year-old. So your hubby is not correct when he says that this 'is only a phase'. Your daughter needs help ASAP. I think there may be 2 components that are playing a role and that you need to address both of them: 1) she needs to be helped to lose weight so please take her to a a clinical dietitian (visit the Association for Dietetics in SA Website at: and click on "Find a Dietitian" to find a dietitian in your area). This is necessary because young children need a special diet prescription worked out for them that permits them to lose weight while still allowing them to grow normally. In addition encourage her to become more active (swimming or going for walks or cycling) - anything to get active so that she stimulates her metabolism. 2) depression can make patients gain a lot of weight and it is not clear if her depression is due to the overweight or if her overweight is due to her depression. In both instances she needs to see a psychiatrist who can diagnose what is going on and prescribe the proper medication.
So take the necessary steps immediately before this situation spirals out of total control.
