underactive thyroid
Im 22 years old and im following a reasonably healthy diet. I do however suffer from tiredness - i dont have lots of energy - , my skin is very dry and i cant lose weight. Ive red that this is the symptoms of an underactive tyroid, but im very reluctant to go to doctor and be presribed thyroxine, because apparently it causes osteoporosis. is this true and is there anything alternative that i can take for underactive thyroid?
Thanks so much for all your time and help

Dear Susan
The symptoms you describe do sound as if you have a thyroid deficiency. But where on earth does this story that thyroid hormone or Eltroxin (the replacement medication) will cause osteoporosis come from? If this were true then all women with normal thyroids would be at risk of osteoporosis, which is certainly not the case. Please have a medical checkup and if the dr does prescribe thyroid hormone for you, then take it as prescribed and you will feel so much better.
