The point of the "lightning crouch" is to make yourself low (obviously), but also so that if the lightning does strike you, it passes through your body and into the ground, causing the least damage as it does so. If you lie flat, you are increasing the surface area with which your body is touching the ground, and if the lightning strikes nearby it may travel through the ground and hit you. NOTE: the lightning crouch is only a desperate last resort, and won't offer much protection. Make sure you avoid having to use it!
