In some cases, implantation bleeding and early pregnancy related hormonal fluctuations or vanishing twin syndrome may be the cause of erratic or even cyclical bleeding in early pregnancy. However, an important aspect is an early pregnancy ultrasound scan as well as, if necessary, blood hormonal evaluation.
To confirm a pregnancy, it is imperative that a blood pregnancy test be done, especially if there are additional bleeding disorders. Also, the possibility of an ectopic pregnancy (pregnancy in the tube) must be seriously considered.
