Menopausal or not?
Dear fertility expert

I am ttc for 6 years now. A few months ago, I had tests done and my doctor said that I am approaching menopause and that he would not even attempt to assist me.
At that stage my FSH was about 28 and LH about 23. My estrogen was about 97. My cycle was about every 5-6 months apart.

I was not about to accept this diagnosis and non-treatment and went for second opinion. The same diagnosis was made, but was offered a "non-guarantee" treatment to try improve my status with the possibility of doing ART at a later stage.

After 4 months on medication and having had 3 cycles during that time (about 40-44 days apart), I had the tests redone.

It was as follows:
- FSH: 15.9
-LH: 4.6
-estradiol: 123

Has my status improved or am I still in the menopausal range. Is there still a chance that ART will work in the near future?

Dear Haley

Without knowing your age it is extremely difficult to comment simply on the blood results. However, the improvement of the FSH and LH levels certainly suggests a transient menopausal status, which is often seen in cases of premature ovarian failure or in women who are not yet in TRUE menopause. In such cases, ART, if done at the correct stage, may result in successful conception.
