Trying to conceive
Hi Doc, I am 33 and my husband 39. We have been trying for a baby for 6 months now. I am worried about irregular cycles. Previously had the Mirena fitted but been removed 2 years ago. My cycles are some months 30 days, some 32 and some 33 days. I am worried that I am not ovulating? I also suffer from very heavy periods and a long build up of bloatedness and pms.
Please advice.

Dear Cindy

Although your cycles are irregular, it still falls within the accepted range for normal cycle length.
However, due to the erratic intervals, it is difficult to establish the exact day of ovulation. Since menstruation follows ovulation, ususally by a constant 14 days, it can be inferred that ovulation is in your case occuring between day 17 and 20 of your cycle.
However, to verify this I would recommend that you use ovulation monitoring as a means of ascertaining the exact day of ovulation. This ovulation monitoring can be done with the use of ovulation testing kits such as Clearplan, etc and I would suggest starting the monitoring process round about day 14 or 15 of your cycle.
This will assist in timing intercourse more accurately and should ovulation not be confirmed by the use of these testing sticks, in two consecutive cycles, I would suggest that ultra sound monitoring be used as an alternative. Furthermore, an endometrial biopsy performed on the 28 or 29 day of your cycle may be a good way of determining when ovulation has indeed occured.
