Mild discomfort after excercise
Hi Doc,

I did a 4km jog yesterday and a 5km today. Afterwards I felt a slight discomfort on the outer side of my right knee (bony part). Almost though the muscle was sprained. It is not painful at all and there are no signs of inflammation or any swelling, but if I sit for a long time and then get up, it feels stiff.

Some advice would be greatly appreciated as I would not like to injure myself at this stage.

With any injury, it is of course basically impossible to diagnose the cause of the problem in such a format, and if it is an injury, then the only sure way to diagnose is of course by seeing a doctor or physio. However, it may not be necessary, because it sounds as though this is a new problem and so you may have caught it early.

The bottom line with injuries is that training is most often the cause. That is, you increase the volume or intensity too soon. This may or may not be the case with you, but certainly, backing off the training for a little while is important. It's not something that you can run through or avoid and hope it gets better. Therefore, you probably just need a day or two of complete rest, and then perhaps you can get back into things.

Now, the other factors that may cause such pain are muscle strength imbalances, and stretching. The muscle strength is again impossible to detect and correct like this, but stretching is certainly a good idea anyway.
