Shoulder pain when running
Hi Ross,
I trust you' re well.

Of late my right shoulder has been giving me trouble when I run. After the first 5k' s I get this sharp pain in my shoulder joint. It' s hard to pinpoint exactly where it' s coming from, but it feels like it' s somewhere between the collar bone and the ball joint. What could be the cause of this? I don' t do any other form of exercise besides running and didn t hurt the shoulder in anyway. I have started trail running again and at times I do sway my arms a bit harder to help with getting me up a nasty contour climb.
Could that be it?

Hi Jess

I've heard of this before, but it hasn't helped me figure out what the cause is! I suspect it's a spasm due to tension in the muscle, possibly because they're working harder, but also possibly because you're carrying your arms a bit too much. It's important to relax at the shoulder, otherwise you can develop this - the other common place is on the top of the shoulder (where the lats are). It's usually a case of relaxing and it goes away.

Hope that helps, but I must confess I'm guessing, because I don't know for sure.
