I've just heard I'm 8 weeks pregnant. I am already 10kg's overweight. What can I do to prevent picking up too much weight or even try and loose some weight. I have access to a gym but do not know what type of exercises to do that will be safe and even help me loose some weight.

A healthy diet and exercise program would be the best option. Tell the gym instructor that you are pregnant and they will be able to give you an exercise shedule. Avoid lifting weights which could strain your back and do not do aerobic exercises that push your pulse up too high for too long.
