Drinking & Smoking
My sister is 6 weeks pregnant. At her last gynae visit, she told me that her gynae told her that she can have 3 glasses of wine per day and that it wont harm the fetus. I went onto a site that deals with FAS and I am in two minds to send the info to her. I feel that she is being very irresponsible and what concerns me is that they say its "pretty common" for your baby to have drain disfunctions. She also told me that her gynae says that she could continue with her smoking. According to this man, it will put the baby in distress if she stops now. My sis is 28 and I feel that she should know better. I just need info on whether you fetus/unborn baby will realy go into distress if you stop smoking? I am REALY concerned, not so much for my sister, but for the unborn baby.

I disagree with your gynaecologist. There is debate as to whether any alcohol at all should be taken in pregnancy. Certainly 3 glasses per day would be way over the limit in terms of causing FAS. Smoking is also harmful Stopping smoking will not cause the baby to become distressed.
