Dear Nomahobe
Degenerative changes actually means that the normal wear-and tear changes we experience as we get older, are visible in the lumbar vertebrae i.e. there is degeneration of the cartilege between the vertebrae and then the vertebrae inthese areas develop some bone overgrowth (called osteophytes) which can cause discomfort and pain. Stay active and if the discomfort is really bad, ask your doctor to prescribe something for the pain- ususally an anti-inflammatory tablet to be taken after meals.
The pot belly could have several causes- age, meno-pause, a vertebral fracture etc. If this really bothers you, make an appointment with your doctor for a full check-up.
