Osteoporosis
My mom was diagnosed with osteoporosis 2 weeks ago. What kind of exercise can she do and what exercise equipment can she buy (for days that she cannot walk outside i.e. when it is raining or very cold)?
Dear mm
Walking is the best exercise ( at least 3/4 of an hour 3-4 times a week). If she can get a treadmill tyoe of machine, she can do it indoors, but they are rather expensive. If she has stairs, she can climb them a few times on the days that she cannot go outside. Muscle strengthening exercises like Pilates are also important. She can get a sheet with these exercises from a physiotherapist. You can also contact the osteoporosis Foundation on 021 931 7894 for more info.
