Dear Chessbaby
The only way to determine your HIV status is to have an ELISA test done. If this is positive, a more sensitive test like the Western Blot is done to confirm the diagnosis. A CD4 count is done to evaluate the chances of the patient developing another opportunistic infection like TB. The lower the CD4 count, the higher the chances of developing an infection. It is also used to determine whether an HIV positive patient needs prophylactic treatment. A CD4 count does not reflect how active the HIV is replicating in the body.
