3 year old not talking
My son turns 3 in 2 weeks. He's a very healthy child, but he doesn't want to speak. He can say very basic words like "mamma, dadda, tata, baba", but doesn't say them very often & refuses to say proper words. He would rather make associations, like bark when he sees a dog instead of calling it that. We've tried everyting to encourage him to speak, but to no avail.
I read that children of that age should be encouraged to spead by making them ask for what they want instead of pointing to it. I have tried that many time - without any success. It gets to the point where he looses his temper & throughs a tantrum ; I loose my patience & just give in. This could last up to 30 minutes. I also try to sit in front of him & say a simple word like "dankie" (we're Afrikaans), but he would just look at me with a grin as if it's a joke. We've also tried reading to him, but he's more interested in tearing out the book's pages. We bought him Afrikaans childrens' videos, but he doesn't seem to like it. We also had his hearing tested when he was 1 year old & there was no problems. He also responds to noise & to voices without strain, so I don't think this has anything to do with his hearing. One of my colluege's grandson is 2 months younger that my son & he also refuses to talk. Another's daughter is a few days younger & speaks fluently. It's said that boys are much lazier than girls & every child reaches milestones at their own time ; is this true? Should I be worried?

This is a very common problem. When children, usually boys, reach the age of 3 years and are still not speaking, they should see a children's speech therepist.
