4 month old boy bitten by tick
my friend lives on a farm in the western cape and she found a tick firmly latched onto the fold of skin of her 4 month old sons hand. Her dog died of billary last year and there has been many cases of tick bite fever in our area. The tick was a small reddish tick and when she pulled it off the head may have remained behind. What is the next step she should take and does she have cause to be concerned? is there something that can be done to prevent tick bite fever

This baby is certainly at risk of tick bite fever. There is nothing your friend can do to prevent the onset of the disease if it is going to occur-of course there is a chance that the child will not develop the illness. If the baby becomes feverish or irritable or develops any sign of a rash especially on his feet she must take him to see a paediatrician immediately. She should keep the bite area clean using an antiseptic cream such as Betadine.
