Baby not sleeping during the day
Hi dr
My 10 week old daughter often has days where she does not sleep at all. The other day she went 15 hours without any sleep. Today she' s already been awake for 8 hours and counting. She' s not in any obvious discomfort, except that her eyes are now red from tiredness and she is obviously becoming increasingly miserable. I have tried various methods to put her to sleep, but no success. She becomes drowsy and sometimes fall asleep for 5 minutes, but then she wakes again. She sleeps very well at night with a stretch of between 5 - 8 hours and only wakes for 1 feed (even on these challenging days). She is exclusively breastfed, drinks well and is picking up weight. She is also otherwise healthy.
Please advise what I am doing wrong or if there is anything else I can try because it is not normal for a baby to not sleep during the day? I am battling with a routine with her since her sleeping habits are not predictable.
Thank you
E.

Something is keeping your baby awake for long stretches during the day and she is so exhausted at night that she sleeps quite well. The fact that she will wake after only 5 minutes at times seems to indicate that something is worrying her. The most likely cause is reflux of stomach acid causing her discomfort.Discuss this with your paediatrician as your baby's sleep pattern is definitely a problem.
