Baby with recurrent bottom rash
Hi Docter,

I really need help please. We are currently living in China with our 7 month old daughter. For the past 2 weeks she has had a rash on her bottom. At first I thought it was diaper rash and treated it with Bepanthen (which I had flow in from SA as it is not available here), it did not respond and I applied Mycostatin ointment. The rash was almost gone, but then I ran out of ointment. Went to the pharmacy (language is really a problem as English is not widely spoken) to get something similar. The next morning the rash was so bad and she was constantly crying when awake. I took her to the Docter who prescribed an antifungal cream, to be applied once a day. I have been doing this since Monday and there seemed to be improvement, but this morning it is really bad again. I give her probiflora probiotics, let her go without nappy for approx 3 hours per day, apply Bepanthen during the day and over the antifungal cream at night, change her nappy every 2 hours (immediately if it' s dirty), and only rinse her bottom with warm water and cotton balls. I am really desperate at this stage and any advise will be much appreciated.. Could it maybe be something in her diet? She eats fruits and vegetables (Organic Baby food), and a little bit of protein at night (chicken and sweet potatoe or something similar). She has also been teething and I gave her teething rusks to chew on..

Many thanks in advance..

It is difficult to know what is causing your baby to have such a severe nappy rash. Change the brand of her nappies and use the rival brand. Also do not give her any fruit for at least 5 days. Apply Antipeol cream after every nappy change.Keep up the probiotics. If she does not improve she may need a zinc supplement such as Zinplex for babies.
