My son of 2,5 has started burping a excessively these past 3 weeks. I have not changed anything in his diet, and I don' t know if this is an issue, but Granny asked me to ask you what the possible cause may be and if there is any reason to be alarmed? I know she secretly gives him Diet carbonated drinks when I am not around, but it is minimal. I just want to know if there is any reason to be concerned.
Thank you!

It is unusual for a boy of this age to burp excessively. This is unlikely to continue for long periods after one or two gassy drinks. In this age group burping is usualy due to swallowing excessive amounts of air when eating or drinking.Drinking too much fruit juice has also been found to be a cause in some children. Another possible cause is reflux but this is unlikely if there are no other obvious symptoms. The burping problem usually stops as suddenly as it started.
