cyst
Hello again.

I wrote to you last week about the mesenteric cyst. I am now 30 weeks pregnant, and our baby girl has a cyst in her abdomen. We were told by the person that did the ultrasound that he suspected it was a mesenteric cyst. It was 2x2x3cm last Wednesday; 5 days earlier it was 1.7cm. I went to the gynae today, and it measured 4cm. He says it is either a ovarian cyst or a mesenteric cyst. He says it is difficult to distinguish between the two. He has suggested that I see him every week so that we can monitor the cyst.
This is my question:
He says that if it has not gone by the time she is born, it will be drained. From everything that I have read, it should be surgically removed. I am worried that she is not going to receive the right treatment, should it not go away. I am also worried about the cyst causing a twist inside her. He did not mention this at all. What is the likelihood of a twist, and what would the consequences be?

Thank-you for your understanding.

If this is a mesenteric cyst then the chances of a twist developing in your baby's bowel is a relatively small possibility, but as you know it can occur. It is important to monitor the size of this cyst regularly so that you will know if it is still present when your baby is born-and also what type of cyst this is. At birth she will be seen by a paediatric surgeon if this is necessary and a decision will be taken as to whether any treatment is needed.
