Cystic Fybrosis
Dear Doc
I have twins (a boy and a girl) 13 months old.
My boy has had bronchopneumonia at least 7-10 times from birth.
Could this possibly be linked to cystic fybrosis?
He weighs 11kg and has an healthy appetite.
Thank you

Your son's weight is well above the average for his age which is a very good sign. It does not completely rule out cystic fibrosis but it makes the diagnosis less likely. I must say that he really needs to be fully investigated to try and find out exactly why he has has so many episodes of pneumonia. There are several conditions which need to be excluded here and cystic fibrosis is only one of them. It would really be in your son's best interests if he was seen and investigated by a paediatrician with an interest in respiratory illnesses in children. There are experts in all the larger centres in SA.
