Infant refusing to eat or drink
i have an (almost) 1 year old infant, who was born premature at 34 weeks.Baby has been hypoglycaemic since birth and spent 3 weeks in the NICU before coming home. She has had a pancreatectomy at 8 days old. Feeding is crucial for her condition, but she screams, fights and refuses the bottle and or any solids.we have had her previously hospitalised and the tests have yielded nothing. It is an ongoing battle everyday and extremely draining for us the parents. Please advise what we could do in the circumstances.could this be a behavioural problem as opposed to a medical one? Please help! i am writing to yourselves as a measure of last resort.

This is a complicated problem and the answer to your question does not lie in the usual recommnedations when infants of this age refuse to take their feeds. It would be best to take your baby to see a paediatric gastroeneterologist who is the expert who deals with complex problems like this. These experts are rather few and far between in this country and mainly work in the academic hospitals such as the Red Cross Children's Hospital in Cape Town and the Steve Biko Academic Hospital in Pretoria and at the academic hospital in Durban.
