My son gets sick every month
Hi there.

Since January 2007, my son keeps getting sick almost every month around the same time. He suddenly gets nausea and starts vomiting. This will last about 2-3 days. In this time he doesn't eat, and can barely keep any fluids down. I have been to my family doctor several times, she has no idea what's wrong. He's had blood taken and the results were fine. I give him gravol until the vomiting stops, and then he has a hard time eating again. Finally about the 4th day or so he gets his appetite back. I know there must be something wrong, but no one seems to be able to help me.

This is a well recognised ccondition in children called periodic vomiting or cyclic vomiting syndrome. It seems to be related to migraine headaches in later life and is more common in families where one parent is a migraine sufferer. The true cause is unknown. Avoiding chocolate, caffeine, yellow/hard cheeses and MSG containing foods helps a lot. The most effective treatment is usually antimigraine medication or propanolol. Speak to your paediatrician again now that you have the diagnosis.
