overweight?- 10 year old girl
hallo Doctor,
my daughter is 10year old and weighs 46 kg, by the look of her body she is overweight. She takes Ritalin medication daily but the probable 'appetite-loss' effect of ritalin does not affect her. she is normally active but does not do sport at school, she does have sweets now-and-then but not every day, but she does eat a lot especially in the evenings. what do you suggest I do, put her on a diet or get more exercise or what else? (Pretoria)

I would really advise to promote a healthy lifestyle instead of diets or medication. Remember to limit sweets, cookies, chips, fast food etc. by setting the example and eating a healthy balanced diet everyday at home. Encourage fruit and vegatables and do not limit these at all. Exercise and taking part in school sport will also be an excellent idea. Always build your child's self confidence, even while encouraging her to adopt a healthy lifestyle.
