parents worrying ways
Am not sure if u can give me advice on what to do. My husbands niece recently had a baby (born 28 Dec). We are not very close however have noticed many disturbing factors and are not sure what we should do. The child is being fed "pap" in Lactogen and receives 250ml with almost every feed. Baby cries constantly as they refuse to "wind" baby saying she can bring up winds on her own. Baby's legs are constantly pulled up from cramps and they insist on giving telement, gripe water and panado (5ml) basically four to five times a day. We have tried talking to the mother but she refuses to listen. In order for baby's tummy to work they take a cotton bud and rub it on babys bum. Baby cannot poo otherwise. The father insists baby is naughty cause keeps crying and "smacks" her on the nappy 3 times. He also gives the baby beer to drink. The situation is really unpleasant and we no longer now what to do. Please can you advise?

This is all bordering on actual child abuse. The father is completely irresponsible and indeed dangerous to his baby. His mother seems to be very immture and too lazy to look after her baby properly. You need to involve her mother initially andtell her to assist her daughter. If this does not help you will need to inform the nearest social services or baby clinic.
