Dear Children Allergies
If you friend's daughter suffers from multiple food allergies it is important for her mother to take her to a clinical dietitian (visit the Association for Dietetics in SA Website at: www.adsa.org.za and click on "Find a Dietitian" to find a dietitian in your area), because it is important for the child to have a diet worked out for her that avoids the offending foods but still promotes normal growth. Your friend will have to read all food labels and cut out those foods that contain milk, whey, milk solids, and any form of wheat, and egg. Click on 'Diet' at the top of this page and then on 'Food-related diseases' to read the articles on milk and wheat allergy. Also visit the SA Allergy Association Website at: www.allallergy.co.za . For milk/wheat/egg-free recipes you can try the 'South African Cookbook for Food Allergies & Food Intolerance" by Hilda Lategan. Contact Hilda Lategan, who is also a dietitian, on (012) 546-6410 or send her an e-mail at: mwhildal@mweb.co.za . If your friend's daughter has to cut out all milk and dairy products she will need to take a calcium supplement like Calcium Sandoz or Caltrate every day to prevent a calcium deficiency. Soya milk/yoghurt can be used instead of cow's milk/yoghurt and this is usually fortified with calcium to give you more or less the same calcium intake as when you use cow's milk.
