The term antidepressant is a collective term for a group of drugs that displays antidepressant properties. They are principally used for depressive illness, but are also useful in the treatment of anxiety disorders. To explain it in a very simple way you can say that these drugs adjust the chemical balance of certain substances in the brain (e.g. Serotonin) of which a shortage or an excess may lead to some of the symptoms of depressive illness. These drugs are available on prescription only and is available at any pharmacy.
