Dear Doc

I have e-mailed you but have not received a reply

I live in Republic of South Africa in the province Gauteng. We spent
the December holidays in Mozambique which is a hot tropical country
on the east coast of Africa. We did not know at the time but we were
severely bitten by bed bugs, the bites turned into blisters and
itched like hell and very swollen.
We returned to RSA on the 4 January 2003. After a few weeks we at home
noticed that we were bitten again. It was by chance that I found a
live bug and could have it identified. I believe we must have brought
them into the house in our luggage or bedding as we were camping there
for 17 Days.

My question relates to a statement in a web site article:
"Bed bugs and their relatives apparently do not transmit human disease, but can
cause nervous and digestive disorders in some individuals." and I
also read in another article that this includes difficulty in
urinating . I am experiencing symptoms of this nature and would like
to know if this is permanent and/or how long will it take to go away
or must you seek medical attention.

Seek Medical attention as soon as possible.

We have fumigated the house and we look every day for signs of nests, eggs etc. Can you maybe provide me with some more info PLEASE.

Thank you

Gabbie, the chance that the problems with urinating are due to the bedbugs, is remote. Bedbugs cause local irritation and not systemic symptoms. You can ask your pharmacist for something like Ascabiol® for treating the problem and you will have to wash all your bedding. If the problem with urinating persists you will have to see your doctor. Good luck.
