EMPLOYEE WITH HIV
Hi,
An employee, who works as a cleaner/tea girl, has been diagnosed with HIV/AIDS. I am aware that we cannot discriminate against her, but can you provide some practical advice on how to treat the matter. For example, are there some basic guidelines we can give her about handling our cutlery and crockery, especially should she start coughing or get sicker than she is now.

HIV is only transmitted by blood, semen and other bodily fluids (not really sputum) so the risk to your staff is very low unless she cuts herself. She may be more prone to infections like TB that can be transmitted, so should be given time off to regularly attend the HIV clinic, to get her chronic preventative medication. If you notice that she coughs constantly for > 3 weeks, she should see a doctor. Adding 15-20ml Jik to water used for cleaning will kill any possible viruses or bacteria.
