Hypothyroidism
I would like to know if there is a link between alcohol abuse and thyroid function. Can alcohol abuse cause hypothyroidism and if it can would completely abstaining from alcohol return the thyroid to its normal function without using medication? Would binge drinking affect the S/TSH results in a thyroid blood test?

Dear Susan
No alcohol won't really influence the thyroid, but alcohol is toxic to the body and in high doses can cause general negative effects. Stopping alcohol may not necessarily return the thyroid to normal function.
