Dear Julia,
let's see if our other good readers, some of whom have surely faced this problem and devised ways to handle it, can come up with some tips. I wonder if there are factors in your husband's life, such as at work, that help to tip his moods up and down ? On a good mood day, have you tried discussing things with him, and discovering both whether he has noticed these swings, and what his views are about the best way to handle them ? Maybe he can agree to ways to signal to you when it's a bad day, and decide on a plan by which you avoid irritating him, and he controls the nastier aspects of how he responds to being irritated ?
This is not a Bipolar Disorder, where the mood swings occur over weeks and months, and not between days ; and may be more like a Cyclothymic Personality, in which the mood is more typically unstable --- though in this case, one would expec this to have been typical of how he has behaved as long as you have known him. If what you are describing represents a recent change in his behaviour, it could have various causes, including, perhaps, the early stages of a developing depression. The only way to be more sure might be, if he agrees that it is presently a significant problem and he wants to be able to control it and hasn't found a way to do so, would be to see a shrink for an assessment and advice.
