What could be the cause of tiny (3.5cm) nodules x3 in the neck/throat near thyroid to be causing pain in the neck down the shoulder. The ultra sound scan has detected these nodules but as yet they have not been removed by a surgeon. Despite the size of the nodules the right side of the nect is slighlty swollen and bigger than the opposite side. What would your prognosis be, do you think these are cancerous? Why would they cause discomfort if so small and swelling. Blood test results normal, thyroid function normal, no goitre or oversized thyroid.

Agatha, if you’re able to move them around and the skin moves over them easily, the chances are very small that it is cancer. It’s more likely to be enlarged lymph nodes due to an infective process somewhere, but I can’t guarantee it. The best would probably be to have a fine needle aspiration done and make sure. Good luck.
