Dear Kata
In general, pies are high in fat because of the type of meat used for the filling and the pastry. According to the SA Food Tables a savoury pie made with short crust pastry provides on average 1352 kJ and 23.2 g of fat, plus 96 mg of cholesterol per 100g. Brown bread provides 930 kJ, 2 g of fat and 0 g cholesterol per 100g. Thus when we compare equal weights of a meat pie and brown bread, the brown bread is the healthier option with a lower energy, fat and cholesterol content. Eating pies can increase your total energy, fat and cholesterol intake considerably, so have them in moderation.
