placement of mentally ill teenager
I have had an 18 year old guy staying with me briefly. He has been diagnosed as schizophrenic, alternatively conduct disorder, and various hospitals have failed to find a diagnosis. He was released from a psychiatric unit after 8 weeks havimng displayed few symptoms, but upon release became very aggressive, to the point where he is now back in a lock-up ward in a psych. unit. He needs a structured, non-threatening environment, but we have failed to find anywhere that will take him long term. The search has been going on for a few months, and we are no closer to finding a place where he will be safe and cared for. He is on medication, but with a history of drug abuse and changing medication often, it is difficult to know if it is having any effect.Do you have any suggestions.
Thank you.

Dear RW,
Despite claims to the contrary in goverment propaganda, Mental Health is no sort of priority for this government, and the so-called leaders dealing with mental health issues in the Dept of Health would have made an equivalent contribution to the actual mental health of the nation if they had been in a coma for the last 10 years or more.
Thus, services are poorly planned and poorly developed. The sort of facility you are looking for is one of many sorts of service badly needed in all areas of the country ; while no area is properly serviced. There are limited resources in some urban areas --- the psychiatric hospital where he is being reated has an absolute duty to be fully informed as to what facilities or all relevant asorts, are available within reach of them, and should be able to advise what options there are. As such facilities are so limited, it is less likely that those in other areas would be eager to take on a patient from another area, but they should also be able to check on such possibilities, too.
