hi doc! is it safe 2drink da usn diet fuel nd take dg weightloss tabs with greentea extract while breastfeeding?
Dear Zoe
Generally speaking it is not advisable for breastfeeding mothers to take ANYTHING not prescribe by their medical doctor when breastfeeding. Most chemical compounds, including those found in diet products, will pass from the mother to the child via the breast milk. You are giving your child the very best gift possible by breastfeeding that will influence the child's health positively for the rest of her/his life and even prevent the child from developing obesity in later life. So don't mess with this natural process and expose your baby to all kinds of chemical compounds. To lose weight during breastfeeding you can use eating an energy-reduced, low-fat, high-fibre diet (click on 'Diet' at the top of this page, 'Weight loss', ‘Balanced diet' and then on 'Slimming Diet' for a copy of such a diet), and increasing your energy output by doing regular moderate exercise (take baby for walks in the pram every day for 30 min or longer). Add 2 extra cups of fat-free milk to the diet per day to ensure that you and baby get enough calcium (1200 mg/day). After 6 months when you start weaning the baby you can up your exercise and once you stop breastfeeding you can use such products if they should still be necessary.
Take care
