Dear New Mom
Congratulations on the birth of your baby. Probiotics are 'good bugs' or beneficial microorganisms. Foods that contain such microorganisms are generally yoghurt that has not had the microorganisms destroyed by heat treatment or addition of antibiotics (which are used to preserve some milk products). Look out for yoghurts that state that they contain 'live cultures'. Most other fermented foods that contain live microorganisms are either not available in SA or are products like sorghum beer, which you would probably not use while breastfeeding. You can also buy probiotics at most health shops and pharmacies (e.g. Bifidoforte or Intestiflora).
Enjoy the baby
