Rabbit - ill - need help
We bought a young rabbit about 3 weeks ago. It was very healthy, happy and sociable. On Wednesday this week, we took him to the vet to have a check up and we had him sprayed with Frontline and Ivomec injection for worms. He returned home very miserable and has progressivly gone worse. He has now had 3 small fits that we have seen and is sensitive to light and sound. Is not eating or drinking well at all. It's droppings have become small. We returned to the vet today and they advised that we bath it. We have done this but are so worried. His whole personality has changed and the vet here doesn't seem to know what to do?? Please help urgently! (18/12/2005)
Dear JacRuss
Your rabbit needs urgens supportive care - this could be an underlying infection flaring up because of stress, or a toxic reaction to the frontline used (frontline is much more toxic to rabbits than to other domestic mammals). In any case, he needs to be support fed, his intestinal moveability needs to be maintained (they develop gut stasis very easily) and he needs to be supported with fluids, preferably via a drip. Please get your vet to phone the Onderstepoort veterinary faculty if he needs help with the case.
