Dear Zettie
All foods have the potential to cause weight gain if you eat them in excess. Although the SA Food Tables do not list the energy value for rice cakes, I believe they contain 209 kJ per rice cake, which represents 3.3% of your daily energy allowance if you are an adult woman trying to lose weight. If you nibble 1 or 2 rice cakes on their own per day in the place of sweets and chocolates, then this should not make you fat. If you start eating the rice cakes with high-energy fats and spreads (butter, margarine, mayonnaise, peanut butter, etc) then they can cause weight gain.
