For the average, mutually monogamous couple with no sexually transmitted disease, there is no medical reason to avoid sex during menses. Blood is a good medium for certain infectious agents to grow in, and blood does transmit the HIV virus, so certainly those at risk should not have sex during a period -- or ever have sex without a condom.

Yes, you can have sex during your period. It won't harm you, it won't make you turn green, and it won't make you less feminine. Many women (though certainly not all) find that their sex drives are actually higher during their periods, and if you're one of these women and feel like doing something about it, go to it!
Some basic advice for sex during menstruation:

Don't assume that you can't get pregnant during your menstrual period -- it's rare, but it can happen, particularly if you have a short cycle. Keep using your usual birth control method.
Yes, sex during menstruation is messy. To keep from getting blood all over the sheets/floor/preferred surface, you can put a dark towel underneath you; some women will also use a diaphragm during their periods to keep the blood out of the way for a while. (If you've always fantasized about having sex in the bathtub, this might be a good time to try it ;-).)
Some women find that they need extra lubricant during their periods; others find the menstrual fluids to be sufficient. Do whatever feels best to you.
