Sodium in the blood -wha does it mean?
An 85 year old relative of mine has recently been hospitalized and told that he has sodium in the blood. Please could you explain what this could be caused by and what the treatment or prognosis is. He has been on Warfarin, after suffering a stroke, for several years.

Sheila, everybody has sodium in the blood, so i think that they mean that his sodium levels are high. The most common causes in the elderly are inadequate water intake, kidney problems, drugs and fever. The treatment and prognosis depends on the cause and of course on the person’s general state of health. The best would be to ask the treating physician as he has all the relevant details. Good luck.
