Spinal Tuberculosis
Good day, a co-worker of mine was booked off work September 2012 for chronic back pain. After going to several doctors they said she needs an operation and needs to be booked off. We were told it was a growth of some sort. However, today upon working with her claims and UIF this morning we noticed that her medical certificate stated it was spinal tuberculosis. Is this condition contagious, and should we have tests done. Will doctors do it without a letter,

Spinal tuberculosis is very rare. It is not contagious, unless the person also has respiratory tuberculosis. In some instances, the tuberculosis does not cause a respiratory infection but rather lodges in any part of the body, like for instance the spine. To the patient, it is very painful and causes a lot of tissue damage. You can consult your nearest pathology lab to have sputum samples taken to exclude tuberculosis.
