The boy who cried wolf...
I posted a few days ago about my 5 year old who tells lies. Following advice from CS (and several other people I asked), I decided to tell her the story of the boy who cried wolf. Oh boy... Clearly she has listened to Little Red Riding Hood much too often. The message about not telling lies was completely obscured by the fear that a wolf would come and eat her! I think we will shelve this story until she is past the phase of interpreting everything literally... :-)
Fascinating. Maybe there's a rather urgent need to emphasize (a) that it's a fable meant to illustrate a point rather than a Weather Forecast of heavy falls of Wolf in the neighbourhood, (b) and that part of the message is that we all help and protect each other and keep each other safe --- but that liars are hard to protect, so that by telling the truth, she can truly keep the wolf from the door !
I wonder what other fables might serve the purpose ? I love aNNa's suggestion for a modern version ( who needs wolves, anyway ? ). And of course, if you really wanted to worry her, Belloc's one thing, but ever read Struwwelpeter ? It's amazing the stuff that parents 100 years ago thought not only fit for kids, but good for them !
